Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine. The IAEA began negotiations on a temporary ceasefire to repair the Zaporizhia NPP power line Peace and security
Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) lost connection to its main external power supply line on Tuesday and is now dependent on a single backup line. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, announced the start of consultations with Russia and Ukraine, the purpose of which is to agree on a local ceasefire necessary for urgent repairs.
The 750 kV Dneprovskaya power transmission line was disconnected on Tuesday after information was received about its damage. The plant administration and the Ukrainian power system operator are in contact with the IAEA regarding plans for restoration work. Agency experts stationed at the station continue to closely monitor the situation.
The repair time frame remains uncertain. However, according to the head of the IAEA, the agency proposed that both sides establish a ceasefire period to ensure a safe environment for assessing damage and restoring infrastructure.
Previously, the IAEA has already facilitated the conclusion of five such agreements, which allowed for six separate repairs to be carried out on power supply lines associated with the Zaporizhia NPP.
