UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Matthias Schmale strongly condemned another wave of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of civilians.

Over the past night, at least one person was reportedly killed, dozens were injured, and hundreds of thousands were left without power, heat or water amid severe winter weather.

In Kharkov, a dormitory where displaced persons lived who fled the fighting on the front line came under fire. The hospital building and residential buildings were also damaged.

In Kyiv, thousands of apartment buildings, which were gradually connected to basic utilities after the attacks on January 9 and 20, were again left without electricity in sub-zero temperatures. The entire city of Chernigov and hundreds of thousands of families in the Chernigov region were left without electricity.

Repair teams and humanitarian workers continue to work in low temperatures to provide assistance to the victims.

“This systematic cycle of attacks on energy infrastructure violates international humanitarian law and must stop,” said a statement on behalf of the Humanitarian Coordinator.

He stressed that civilians should live in their homes safe and warm, and not in fear of the next round of destruction.
