Humanitarian organizations are providing emergency assistance to residents of the town of Bogodukhov in the Kharkov region of Ukraine after an overnight drone attack that killed three young children and their father. The family recently moved from another front-line area in search of safety, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday.
According to local employees, the strike occurred around midnight on February 11. The residential building was completely destroyed. The Proliska humanitarian mission reported that in the house there were a father, a pregnant mother and three children, the youngest of whom were only one and two years old. A man who had a disability, and the children died.
The woman was taken to the hospital. Doctors are providing her with emergency care – her condition is assessed as extremely serious, including from a psychological point of view. Humanitarian organizations plan to provide further support as soon as possible.
Neighboring houses were also damaged: windows were broken, roofs were destroyed, a car was burned, and outbuildings were destroyed, aid workers said. In sub-zero temperatures, they help victims close openings in their homes and carry out emergency repairs to keep warm and prevent further damage. People are also provided with psychological assistance and legal advice regarding damage to their property.
On Sunday, February 8, as a result of an attack in Bogodukhov, a woman and a 10-year-old boy were killed, and three more were injured. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs notes that this settlement had not previously been subjected to such intense attacks and that is why the internally displaced were considered a safer place for relocation. But, as the UN has repeatedly noted, there are practically no safe places left on the territory of Ukraine.
Children are under constant threat
The day before, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also reported victims among minors.
UNICEF said it was shocked by reports of the death of a ten-year-old boy and his mother in the Kharkov region, as well as an eleven-year-old child in the Donetsk region. Over the past five days, according to the organization, 14 children were injured.
Representatives of the fund emphasized that Ukrainian children live every day under the constant threat of attacks, and many young Ukrainians have already died.
Delivering aid
Aid workers continue to support affected families, helping local communities cope losses and destruction.
On Wednesday, a UN humanitarian convoy with medical and hygiene materials arrived in the front-line settlements of the Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that access to the area was “extremely difficult due to ongoing fighting.” Of the 10,000 people who lived there before the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, about 500 remain – “mostly elderly and people with disabilities.”
According to Ukrainian authorities, several civilians were killed and injured as a result of the fighting between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The most affected areas are Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Sumy and Kherson regions. In the Zaporozhye region, a hospital and a kindergarten were damaged, and thousands of people were left without heating after the attack.
