Capitol building in Washington. UN Women regrets the US decision to withdraw from its Executive Board Women

The United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, UN Women, said it regrets the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the organization’s Executive Board.

The organization emphasized that since the founding of UN Women, cooperation with the United States has played a significant role in advancing the rights of women and girls around the world – from strengthening laws and institutions to expanding economic opportunity, supporting women’s leadership, advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda and combating violence. The organization’s statement emphasizes that gender equality is the basis of peace, progress, economic sustainability and democracy. Against a backdrop of increasing backsliding on women’s rights and growing global inequality, international leadership and multilateral cooperation remain critical, the organization said. UN Women is committed to continuing constructive dialogue with the United States, as with all other UN member states, and fulfilling its mandate to protect and advance the rights of women and girls in partnership with governments, civil society, the private sector and the UN system.
